The Indonesian Annual Congress of Congenital Heart Disease (INACHD)

THE 3RD INACHD
GROWN UP CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE:

ENTERING A NEW ERA OF CARDIOLOGY

BACKGROUND

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is found in 0.5-0.8% of live births and encompass one third of all congenital anomalies worldwide. In 1950, the survival rate of CHDs was only 15% but with the development and evolution of modern medicine, more than 90% of CHD patients can survive until adulthood (>18 years). In 2010, adults contributed to around 66% of all CHD patients. While prognosis has improved greatly, the increased survival also bring new challenges to this now aging population. Mortality risk associated with aging is disproportionately increased in this population and mostly due to tachyarrhythmias and heart failure.

Management of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) remains challenging. Heart failure occurs sub clinically which requires close and routine clinical observation to enable prompt management of any hemodynamic abnormalities. A more contemporary issue is regarding the COVID-19 vaccination and how there’s still an on-going debate on its safety in ACHD patients. Proper management of ACHD will confer a magnanimous benefit towards both survival and quality of life, hence it is critically important that all medical personnel, especially Cardiologists, are able to identify, and treat ACDH as well as tackle any comorbidities may be associated with poor outcome. Furthermore, knowledge regarding the newest guidelines, diagnostic modalities and interventions are paramount to improving patient outcomes. The 3rd INA-CHD is part of a routine webinar series presented by the Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Disease Working Group.
